CIPS holds exams in international centres three times a year, May, July and November.  For each of our qualifications you are required to complete five units. You will be required to join CIPS as a Student Member before you can enter for an exam.

Apply for CIPS membership

CIPS requires you to be a registered member prior to registering for any exams. Only certain membership options are available overseas. Please visit the CIPS website to determine the option that best suits you. Membership registration is open throughout the year.

You can make your application by submitting the application form and proof of payment via email at or in person at our office in Johannesburg.

Dates and locations

Exam registration is open three times a year for sittings in May, July and November. The venue for your exam will be confirmed on your statement of entry.

To register to sit a CIPS exam with the British Council download and complete the form at the bottom of this page. Be sure to identify the correct exams centre and make your payment to the British Council (not CIPS). Send your completed application form and proof of payment to Please note that we cannot process applications without a valid proof of payment.

No refunds given on CIPS fees. All requests have to be made to the board directly.

Before the exam

Once we have received confirmation of your application, we will send you a notification within seven working days of payment. CIPS will send you the statement of entry. If you do not receive the statement of entry form CIPS two weeks before the exam please contact CIPS. Your statement of entry will include your exam timetable. Once you are regstered you can also check your exams itinerary and update your contact details on the My CIPS webpage. Be sure to browse the CIPS website for essential resources for students and trainers who are studying, taking exams or training for CIPS qualifications.

At the exam

Please bring the following with you to your exam session:

  • Identification such as ID book or passport
  • Statement of entry
  • Pens, pencils in a CLEAR bag
  • Basic calculator
  • No electronic devices. e.g. mobile phone, etc

The British Council makes every effort to cater for candidates with special needs. Should you require assistance in this area, please contact our Customer Service team who will be able to advise you on the options available. Please note that it can take up to 3 months for some arrangements to be put in place.
