Below you will find instructions on how to register for your IGCSE/International GCSE and school exams if you are a private candidate.

Register for your exam

You can register online. The registrations close on 8 August 2024.

You will need 

  • An ID/Passport sized photograph
  • A copy of a South African ID Book/ID Card or a valid Passport; a birth certificate for applicants under the age of 16. Please note that a signed consent form is required for all minors( <18 years old). The form can be downloaded from our download documents below.

Pay for your exam

You will find the fees for all exams listed on the registration system. Your application will not be processed until you have paid for your exams in full.

Similarly, you will not be allowed to attend an exam if you have paid but have not completed the application and submitted this along with all required documents to the British Council for confirmation of your registration.

There are two ways you can pay;

Pay Online

We accept Visa and Mastercard credit and Debit cards only for payment. You will be directed to a secure payment page.

Payment in full must be received by the registration deadline of 8 August 2024.

Late registration - penalty fees

There is a normal registration period for each exam session.  please submit your final registrations ahead of the deadline. British Council will apply late penalty charges for short notice changes required once a deadline is reached. 

You may still be able to register for exams after 8 August 2024, but you will have to pay a penalty fee. You can find more information about late registration penalty fees from your British Council office.

Your registration is now complete

You have successfully registered for your exam with the British Council. You will receive your Statement of Entry and information about your examination venues approximately three weeks before your exams. 

If you need to make any changes to your registration, please contact your local British Council office.

Practical examinations

  • We do not offer practical exams in Cape Town. We can only offer subjects with an 'alternative to practical' component.
  • We are offering AS/A Level Biology, Physics, and Chemistry with a practical component in October/November 2024 exams in Johannesburg only.
  • We do not offer coursework subjects.

Speaking examinations

  • If you are registering for any subjects with a speaking component, please ensure that you are aligned on the testing window period.
  • Please follow up on 13 September 2024 if you do not receive a speaking exam date.
