The British Council’s work with school systems aims to improve learning outcomes for young people. Research has shown that in order to participate in a global economy, young people need to be equipped with core skills, which supplement the traditional curriculum, a largely subject-focussed approach. These are also referred to as deep learning skills, 21st century skills, transversal skills or core skills and competencies.

“Our Connecting Classrooms programme is a proven model of UK-SA co-operation in 21st Century teaching and learning.  This new stream – focusing on Core Skills development - is vital addition to teacher development; it will refresh how a leader thinks about their school and motivate them to drive up standards in SA and UK schools,” said Colm McGivern, British Council Country Director, South Africa.

To ensure that the core skills that we base our schools strategy on are in line with the British Council’s international cultural relations purpose, we have drawn from existing frameworks, and developed our own list of six core skills, as follows:

  •  Critical thinking & problem solving
  • Collaboration and communication
  • Creativity & imagination
  • Citizenship
  • Digital literacy
  • Student leadership & personal development

British Council therefore invites interested individuals and or organisations to offer facilitation services in the delivery of this programme.
